Should My Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?

This is a very common question we get prior to booking a deep tissue massage appointment. Many people think it’s going to be super painful, but that’s simply not true. If there is an area that has a knot and is tight, YES, you will feel some pain or discomfort. But it should be more like a “hurts so good” sensation rather than a tense or uncomfortable feeling. Here’s what you can expect when you get a deep tissue massage at Brielle Integrated Health:

Before Your Deep Tissue Massage

Prior to your deep tissue massage, our therapist will ask about any areas where you may have knots or pain. It is important to let your massage therapist know exactly what is bothering you, how long you have been in pain, and if you are taking pain medication. This will help the therapist understand exactly what is going on with your body and treat your symptoms more effectively.

Will it be Uncomfortable?

During your deep tissue massage, always speak up if you are in pain! Don’t suffer through discomfort! This actually works against the benefits of massage because when the pressure is too deep, your body tenses up, and the therapist has a harder time moving through the different layers of your muscle and soft tissue.

If it’s not tolerable, you should always let your massage therapist know. Our experienced therapists are trained to identify non-verbal clues of “pain”, but it’s better if you tell us. Never be afraid to ask your therapist to adjust the pressure and adapt the rest of your massage therapy session.

Post-Deep Tissue Massage

After your deep tissue massage, there are several ways to prevent being sore the next day. Apply an ice pack for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off to any area was that heavily massaged. It’s also a great idea to do some gentle stretches to prevent the muscles from tightening again. Before you leave your session, feel free to ask our therapist for suggestions on how to stretch the problem areas.

There are many health benefits to massage such as boosting immunity, pain management, relief of tension related headaches, improved circulation, stress relief, and more! If you would like to book an appointment at Brielle Integrated Health, please call us today at 732.292.9900.
